My Equipment

Overview of My Equipment 1

I thought it would be good to share with everyone an overview of the equipment I use for my business. I get asked all the time “what do you edit on?” “what software do you use?” “what lenses and cameras do you have?” etc and so this blog post is o good way of sharing that information.

The above photo is of my edit suite. As you can see, I try and keep it as tidy and organised as possible but this doesn’t always happen (I did tidy it for taking these photos). I primarily edit on an Apple iMac running Adobe Creative Cloud. The iMac is the 27 inch 2013 model,  3.5GHz Intel Core i7 upgraded with 32GB of RAM and a GTX 780M 4096mb graphics card. I chose to go with the 1TB Fusion Drive as the main hard drive of this machine as I only store my operating system and software on it.

I also have a Macbook Pro for editing when working away. The spec are Quad Core i7 16GB 512GB SSD 15 inch.
I have a 42 inch Panasonic Plasma TV for client viewing and soon I will be buying a Flanders Scientific 17 inch reference monitor for colour grading and colour correction work.

My main hard drive is the Pegasus Promise R4. This is connected with Thunderbolt and has a 4TB capacity. I have it set up as a RAID 5 configuration and therefore only able to use 3TB. The speed is absolutely fantastic. I have found it to be really reliable and I can easily have multiple layers of 1080P footage whilst editing and it plays back fine at full resolution.

I basically use the Pegasus Promise straight out of the box. I do need to spend some time tweaking some of the settings to really get the most out of this great hard drive but at then moment I am more than happy with it. To test the speed I was getting with the iMac and Pegasus combination I ran the Blackmagic media speed test. The test gave very pleasing results with good read and writing speeds and I am sure I can squeeze more out of it after spending time tweaking.

I also have a 1TB Lacie Thunderbolt hard drive that I use for all my backups and scratch disks, cache files and such like. This little hard drive is great for backing up all my files at the end of each day and simply storing it at home, away from my edit suite office.

Final things worth pointing out with my iMac are an Apple Superdrive for CD/DVD burning as the iMac doesn’t come with a disk drive and an Intuos CTH680/S Medium graphics tablet. I have always used a graphics tablet and just find it more comfortable and I can work better with a pen than a mouse.

I have my main sound coming from a Focusrite Scarlett External soundcard powering a pair of active KRK Rokit 5 speakers. These speakers are perfect for editing with and I find they sound very well balanced.

The main software I use are apps from Adobe Creative Cloud. My main editing software is Adobe Premiere and I use Adobe After Effects for motion graphics/titles etc. Photoshop, Illustrator and Audition are used also. I have quite a few plugins from Red Giant (Trapcode Suite and Colour Suite) and Videocopilot (Optical Flares, Twitch, Elements 3D)

Overview of My Equipment 5

My main camera and favourite piece of equipment is the Canon C100 EOS Cinema Camera. I absolutely love this camera. It is perfect for when I am working on shoots on my own. It takes all my Canon lenses and is the perfect size for run and gun style work. I won’t go into what the camera has to offer, you can find out more details on Canons website however it does come with 2 XLRs and great audio preamps, you can record in Canon C-Log and has built in ND filters. All really handy tools that make this camera a huge step up from my old Canon 60D.

I have a number of lenses but these are the ones that cover 90% of what I film all the time.
They are: Canon 17-55mm f2.8
, Canon 60mm f2.8 Macro
,
Canon Nifty Fifty 50mm f1.8,
Canon 70-200mm f4 & Tokina 11-16mm f2.8. All of these lenses I use for different types of shot and if there is a particular shot on a shoot that these lenses won’t give me then I simply hire a lens to do the job.

To accompany the C100 I have an Atomos Ninja Blade. This is a 5 inch HDMI monitor and recorder. It records directly from the camera’s video output, bypassing in camera compression, allowing the unit to record at 10-bit, 4:2:2 to Apple ProRes or Avid DNxHD files to 2.5″ HDDs/SSDs.

blog-im-500x500Another favourite piece of equipment I use is the DJI Ronin. This is a 3-axis stabilised handheld gimbal system used to create smooth and stable footage.

In the toughest of terrains, walking, running or even filming from a car, the DJI Ronin helps you achieve great footage and I use it a lot when on the move.

My main tripod is a carbon fibre Sachtler ACE and I also have various other tripods, sliders, and monopods. For audio I have a Rode NTG-3 shotgun mic, Rode Blimp Windshield windshield and a Rode Lavalier for interviews.

I use a lot more gear on shoots such as a Lowel lighting kit, F&V K4000S LED lighting kit, various stands, backdrops and flags.

Hope you have found this blog post useful and can now see some of my equipment I use for working in the edit suite or on shoots.
